7 things learned about Retail on The Greeting Card Project
This year I have visited over 50 stores as part of my New Year’s resolution to buy and send more cards and share my experiences at www.YouTube.com/TheGreetingCardProject
I have learnt a number of interesting things about retail whilst filming in so many shops. Here are seven things that could boost your retail sales:
1. Cards are good business
Cards can make up a significant amount of sales in independent gift shops. Those retailers that make the effort to source quick selling cards from reliable publishers and then track their best sellers can add a sizeable chunk to their turnover from a relatively small amount of space in their stores.
2. Know your Top Sellers
The top retailers never run out of their best sellers. To be effective at this you have to track them and make buying decisions based on your sales data rather than feelings about how long the card may have been in stock or not. Similarly, slow sellers are cleared quickly to make way for new potential best sellers.
3. Have a Webpage
Websites have never been easier to create. If you don’t have a big budget you can always use something like wix.com to create a simple page. You just need a few nice photos of your store and be sure to add Google Analytics so that you can track its success. The main info people want from you is your opening hours, location and contact details. You don’t need to worry about selling online to begin with. You just need a page for people to find and share you online.
4. Google Business Listings
At the very least, register your business at www.google.com/business This will enable you to show up when people search for you and keywords relating to your business. Add some nice photos of your shop and fill in the main info. This will also allow your business to show up on Google Maps.
5. Social Media
Most retailers don’t use social media and those that try don’t always use it as effectively as they could. Have content plan for regular postings and stick to it. Keep it simple if it seems like too big a task. Stick to one or two platforms like Instagram and Facebook for now, although it is really useful to be registered on all the major ones so that people who want to tag and talk about you can. Be sure to engage and not just sell.
6. Your Brand
Know what makes your shop different and shout it from the rooftops in everything you do. It’s so important to have some kind of branding on your shop bags. Even if it’s a simple sticker. Shops that have had branded bags have benefited from them featuring in my videos when I pay. Also, it’s free advertising when your customers carry the bags around town.
7. Customer Experience
Well trained staff make all the difference for your customers. Good product knowledge is important as is the asking of good questions like “did you find everything you were looking for?” and “is there anything else you need today?” These are the kind of questions that often lead to extra sales and happier customers who refer others to your business.
It’s been fascinating visiting so many different shops on The Greeting Card Project and buying so many different types of cards. I’ve learned a huge amount about retail and cards doing it. I’ve also enjoyed inspiring others to send more cards to connect with their friends and loved ones.
